Nebraska State Championship report

DROUD JR. NAILS DOWN STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
by Bob Mays LINCOLN, NE-August 30, 2000-Don Droud Jr. took advantage of his pole position start to win his first Nebraska State Championship Wednesday night, as 38 360 Sprints invaded the State Fair Park Raceway. Droud was pressure through the first half of the event by Scott Robertson as they entered lapped traffic on lap 5. By the ninth lap Rick Ideus and Christie Passmore had joined the lead duo. Robertson was trapped behind a lapped car at that point and both Ideus and Passmore slipped by with Passmore monetarily taking 2nd, before Ideus claimed the position. A caution on lap 10 because of Bruce Divis's flat right rear tire, allowed Droud Jr. some breathing room. Although Ideus was never very far back, Droud Jr. was able to assume a comfortable lead to the end of the 20 lapper. Passmore finished third with Robertson and Doug Lovegrove completing the top five. Sixth through tenth were, Mike Chadd, Tim Baker, Larry Pinegar, Jeff Lowery and Dennis Parker. Heat race wins were claimed by Droud Jr., Ideus, Robertson and Passmore, with the first B main going to Mike Odvody and the 2nd B main taken by Tadd Holliman. Bob Zoubek led all the way in the Pro-Am division to claim his second straight State Championship. Behind Zoubek was Jay Kaser, Scott Anderson, Ron Dunn and Marty Steinbach. Heat wins were taken by Kaser, Zoubek, Kevin Olsen and Steinbach. B Feature wins went to Scott Carlson and Jeff Sage. The Good Old Time Racing Association was also on hand for the event, and they provided most of the fireworks during evening with three spectacular wrecks in the first 5 laps of the A Feature. On lap two Steve Hultgren and Gerald Bonney got together going down the backstretch and crashing into the inside wall, with Hultgren's having it's front end torn completely off. On the restart, Nate Canham and Paul Boyd banged wheels in turn two, with Canham's coupe barrel rolling over the inside berm. Then on lap five, Bonney, who was able to repair his car, was sent hard into the outside wall coming off turn for. Despite all the carnage, no injuries were reported. Roger Ruwe servived to win the feature with Guy Scheffler, Carroll Behlen, Robert Taylor Sr. and Boyd following.
