New Egypt Speedway 2000-05-13

New Egypt, NJ (May 13) -- When leader Greg Coverdale spun out of contention, defending URC Sprint Car champ Sean Michael was right there to take control, winning URC's season debut at New Egypt Speedway on Saturday night, with thunderstorms cutting short the rest of the evening.

Coverdale vaulted from his fifth starting spot into the lead on the first lap of the 25-lap URC event and held the point until lap 22, when he spun in lapped traffic, handing Michael the win. John Eldreth finished second, with Jimmy Stitzel, Fran Hogue and Bill Brian Jr. rounding out the top five.

The hotly contested Mid-State Communications Rookie race was won by Dom Buffalino Jr. of Morganville, NJ. Buffalino held off a late-race charge by Califon's Dave Hoffman for his first victory in the eight-week series. Last week's winner, Doug Liedl, was second, followed by Jerry Thompson, Jim Falzini Jr. and Hoffman, who spun coming down for the checker. The win put Buffalino at the head of the point chase with one week to go in the series.

A total of 146 race cars crammed the New Egypt pit on Saturday, running off 16 preliminary qualifying events, the Rookie feature and the URC Sprint main before lightning storms and heavy downpours washed out the remainder of the program. The three events that were rained out -- the Modified, Sportsman and Street Stock features -- will be made up on later dates.

This coming week the Mid-State Communications Rookies will graduate into the Sportsman division, deciding their championship with an extra-distance, double point race. Big-block Modifieds, Sportsman and double features for the Street Stocks are also on the card. Gates open at 3:30 p.m., warm-ups are at 5 and the first flag drops at 6. Adult admission is $12, children 7-12 are $4, and kids 6 and under are free.
