Engel claims final pole at Rockingham

Despite the morning's mayhem, Mihai Marinescu (Raikkonen Robertson Racing) was allowed out for another try, despite having upset his team so much that when he was finally retrieved from the scenery he had to push his own car back to the garage. No one made the slightest effort to help him. Needless to say when the session was stopped with a red flag after just a few seconds, all eyes turned towards the Romanian driver. This time, he wasn't guilty. The offender was Walter Grubmuller (Hitech Racing) this time, the Austrian stranded on the outside at Chapman Curve. At least this time the clock was actually stopped, so with 27 minutes and 12 seconds left on the clock, the order was Mario Moraes (Carlin Motorsport), from Jonathan Kennard (Raikkonen Robertson Racing), Alberto Valerio (Carlin Motorsport), Engel, Atte Mustonen (Raikkonen Robertson Racing), Alistair Jackson (Raikkonen Robertson Racing) and Stephen Jelley (Raikkonen Robertson Racing). No one else had set a time by the moment when the red flags were waved.

Once Grubmuller was retrieved the session restarted, with the clouds lowering overhead and the odd spit of rain hitting the Tarmac. It didn't last long, fortunately and it certainly didn't in any way dampen the track much. Kennard got things underway by setting a benchmark in the 1.13s, while Sam Bird (Carlin Motorsport) slotted into 3rd behind Engel.
