THE USRRC RETURNS AS THE CAN-AM AND GT BEGIN THE REVIVAL WITH ROLEX 24 AT DAYTONA TEST SESSIONS
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The United States Road Racing Championship began a new era in North American motorsports as the first 32 Can-Am and GT cars took to the 3.56-mile Daytona International Speedway road course for the first of three test days in preparation for the 1998 Rolex 24 At Daytona, January 31 - February 1. Recording the fastest speed of the day was Yannick Dalmas, driving the No. 3 Royal Purple Ferrari 333 SP Can-Am. Dalmas, of Bandol, France, posted an unofficial top speed of 127.560 mph (1:40.470), less than two-tenths of a mph slower than the official qualifying record of 127.578 (1:40.456) set by Fermin Velez in 1997. In the GT category, David Brabham, driving the GT-1 class No. 99 Panoz GTR was fastest, posting an unofficial speed of 119.926 mph (1:46.866), faster than the official qualifying record of 118.154 mph (1:48.468), set by Olivier Baretta in 1997. The 1998 Rolex 24 At Daytona will be the first event for the new USRRC, the oldest name in North American Road Racing which now represents a unified road racing authority for sports car competition, featuring prototype open-cockpit Can-Am cars, GT machines and the NTB Trans-Am Series, the latter sanctioned by the USRRC parent company SCCA Pro Racing.
