5th stage special:Foum El Hassan/ Smara. January 3rd 1996

At 13:34 the race information center was informed by the Medical Tango 8 that at the 157th kilometre, the Mercedes Truck 413, which worked also as an assistance vehicle for Citroen, piloted by Laurent GUEGUEN, have had an accident. The accident took place at 300 to 400 metres to the left of the principal road. It's possible, but still unconfirmed, that the truck ran over a mine.

Laurent GUEGEN has died of his injuries, but the two co-pilots are in satisfactory condition.

Motorcycle : Peterhansel won today's stage. Thierry Rannou, who fell, suffers a serious head trauma.
