LEICESTER, N.Y. - Kasey Janzen, the winner of the LIZZARD RACING ENGINES Quick Eight in Grand Bend, Ontario, established himself as the top running entry at the IHRA CARQUEST Empire Nationals in Leicester, N.Y. Janzen, of Niagara Falls, Ont., pushed his supercharged Lumina to the pole position with a 6.492, 212.86.
Slipping into a distant second place in the field is local favorite Dave Tomasino from Holley, N.Y. Tomasino was the second quickest blower car with a 6.700, 202.67 in his classic Camaro.
Tim DeCoff was the quickest of the nitrous-injected entries as he stepped up to the third spot in his 1967 Nova. DeCoff earned a berth in the program with a 6.788, 202.55.
Rounding out the top half of the eight-car field was the quickest Ford in the class, driven by Doug Mills. Mills, of Alachua, Fla., was stout in his Thunderbird with a 6.859, 205.13.
Rounding out the program was Rick Sornberger (6.918,201.79), Mike Ragusa (6.993, 201.70), Mike Guenther (6.995, 191.21) and Brian Tiffe (6.997, 198.15).
The pairings for the first round are Janzen - Sornberger, DeCoff - Guenther, Tomasino - Ragusa and Mills - Tiffe.
The first round of eliminations are slated for 7 PM, this evening.
