Sainz fastest, but Al-Attiyah closes in on win

The battle raged for 11 days with Nasser Al-Attiyah doggedly hanging on to his vastly more experienced team mate, two time WRC champion Carlos Sainz -- something just had to give -- and in the form of Sainz's front suspension, it did... ironically it was being unsighted by Al-Attiyah's dust is what caused him to hit the hole which tore off his wheel.

With an hour's advantage Al-Attiyah is now all but home, but to put his ascendancy into perspective, in the only arena the two have met before, the WRC, Al-Attiyah has but a single point to his name... whereas Sainz held the all time record until the FIA changed the WRC point system from top 8 to top 10. Yet it is far from a mentor and prot?g? relationship, under the VW umbrella the two of them are locked in a bitter inter-team rivalry and every kilometre fought between them has been tooth and nail.

Today though with the pressure completely off his shoulders team boss Kris ...

Sainz wins, but Al-Attiyah still in control

235km is relatively short on the Dakar scale, but after yesterday's long stage changed the leaderboard of three of the four classes, the loop around the vast dunes of the Atacama is still a real test for the whole field. The organizers shortened the special to 207km for the Car and Truck classes.

After doing what he'd been threatening for days and taking over the lead Al-Attiyah had two choices today, conserve or consolidate. Does he drive with restraint to preserve his 6 minute lead, with the risk of Sainz clawing time back, or does he attack the stage, running the risk of making a mistake and loosing the advantage? A tough choice when one of the most successful rally drivers of all time is just behind, but as he demonstrated to full effect yesterday, the Dunes are the Qatari's natural habitat so there was never really any doubt that he would be pushing ... yet Sainz was not to be outdone.

It was unbelievably close through the first part of the test. At CP1 33km in ...

Six stages in the book, now a day to rest

The first week of the Dakar Rally was a triumph for Volkswagen: they have led the rally from day one, and won five of six stages. After taking the first four places during yesterday's stage, the German car manufacturer is firmly in command of the overall standings with their top drivers Carlos Sainz and Nassar Al-Attiyah. The only real remaining threat for VW is the BMW piloted by Stephane Peterhansel, but he is already almost 15 minutes behind the two VW drivers. If BMW want to win the 2011 edition of the Dakar Rally, they need a miracle, as the two other BMW drivers, Krzysztof Holowczyc (5th) and Orlando Terranova (7th) are 1:13:19 and 1:37:54 respectively behind Spaniard Sainz. It looks like the top three will be battling for the victory, but Peterhansel's chances of an overall victory have become uncomfortably slim.

The story of the trucks is similar to the cars, as the almighty Russian Kamaz team is leading the overall standings for the sixth consecutive ...
