F1 Hungarian GP: Norris wins from Verstappen and Antonelli, Piastri retires with gearbox failure

Lando Norris took his first win of the F1 season at the Hungarian GP from Max Verstappen, after Oscar Piastri was denied in the victory fight by a gearbox failure

Lando Norris: "I'm tired! I don't know what happened (in Turn 2), I kept losing the rear and Oscar did a good job to get back. But I was pushing like hell to force the mistake and it's probably the best pace I've ever had. The pace was so good I could keep extending the stints."

"I want to believe [this can continue], considering how good it felt, I want to believe we can continue it. This track's good for us, and it's as good as it can look for us, but I believed we could still win races. The team's put in a lot of work for us to win again."

An excellent race from Verstappen, who offers a slight bit of needle in his assessment that he didn't quite know how he ended up finishing second. 

Still, he has. Hell of an effort. 

"Beautiful. The car was unbelievable today. Flying," Norris says, as McLaren claims its first win of 2026. 

Lawson, Hulkenberg, and Lindblad complete the top 10 - the latter hanging onto the final point despite doing a 49-lap stint on the hard tyre.

Antonelli's third place ensures that he extends his championship lead.

Final lap. Norris just taking some margin to bring the McLaren to the end after Piastri's gearbox failure. Not that it's stopping him from extending his lead.

Antonelli's going to run out of time to catch Verstappen - the traffic proved very costly in his hopes of taking second place. 

Norris continues to extend his lead, but he's staying off kerbs as requested. He's got 14.2 in hand over Verstappen. 

Verstappen's looking safer with each passing lap, as Antonelli's running out of time to catch the Red Bull. Not stopping under the VSC has been key to Verstappen's second place here.

As it stands, Hamilton would lose a place to Leclerc. 

Norris is told to stay off the exit kerbs to play it a bit safe. He's got a 13s lead over Verstappen. 

Norris is 11s in the lead now, and the traffic has hurt Antonelli/Hamilton's chance of catching Verstappen. 

Hulkenberg gets out of their way, and Lawson is next up. 

Hamilton is indeed being investigated for pitlane speeding. He's currently in traffic with Antonelli, which has brought him closer to the Mercedes. 

Bortoleto baulks the pair of them - but it didn't look like the Audi driver was getting any blue flags for a while. 

Lindblad vs Lawson, Round 8213. Lindblad hangs on in Turn 2, but his hard tyres are 40 laps old at this point. Hulkenberg is also licking his lips. 

Bortoleto's strategy hasn't paid off, and Hulkenberg moves ahead into the top 10 - he's not scored a point this year. 

Hamilton gets noted for speeding in the pitlane. 

Hamilton's trying to get back past Antonelli, but has a lurid slide out of Turn 2 and loses a fair chunk of time. 

It's been the story of his afternoon: ends up behind another car, but doesn't have enough pace to close in. 

Norris is continuing to pull away once more, 6.1s clear of Verstappen. Antonelli has got third, then, but Hamilton needs him to at least start cutting into Verstappen's advantage.

Bortoleto is 0.4s up on Lawson in the battle for the final point; the Audi driver has one-stopped this afternoon, as has Arvid Lindblad. 

"I think I was ahead," Antonelli says, as the two were neck and neck at the safety car line. Hamilton duly gives the position back to Antonelli. 

Piastri's slow! He's come to a stop on the exit of Turn 3, as he reports that he's lost the gearbox. 

The chance of a 1-2 has gone begging here. 

Norris is 12.3s clear of Piastri, then, with Hamilton catching the McLaren - and Verstappen catching him.

Russell pitted for a second time, and rejoins in eighth. 

Antonelli comes in to stop, even though he wanted to stay out. He'll come out behind Leclerc in sixth, as the team felt the Mercedes couldn't hang it out for another 16 laps.

Norris is told to keep it a bit less lairy and to avoid overstressing his tyres. 

If Antonelli one-stops this and stays clear of Piastri, its call to give Norris a long run is surely one that the irate Aussie can't contest either. 

Hamilton is two seconds behind Piastri, and Verstappen is 3.8s behind him.

Perez's left-front suspension appeared to just give up mid-corner, in Turn 4, but he's managed to bring it into the pit lane.

Norris is seven seconds clear of Antonelli now, as Piastri really isn't closing in on the Mercedes. 

"Can you advise, something feels wrong with the car?" Leclerc asks. Bryan Bozzi tells him that it's overheating and to get back into the rhythm.

Leclerc decides to ask "what rhythm?".

Verstappen is now within 5s of Hamilton now. 

Perez is crawling to a halt, complaining that something is "flapping" on the suspension. 

Antonelli continues to circulate, 4.2s down on Norris but 4.5s clear of Piastri - who isn't really catching.

The Mercedes driver is told to be a bit more circumspect with track limits, as he's a fan of cutting that chicane.

Verstappen is 6.8s behind Hamilton at the moment, and eating into the Ferrari's advantage - that's the battle for third place. 

Norris is continuing to lead-build now. He wasn't lying about that pace in reserve. 

Norris puts a big dive on Antonelli to retake the lead, firing his way past at Turn 1. Antonelli tried to get the switchback out of the corner, but Norris proceeded to grab the inside line for Turn 2. 

Job done, it seems. 

Norris is a lot quicker than Piastri here and he's just rocketed to a six-second advantage over his team-mate. He's now on Antonelli's tail.

Leclerc has been noted for a yellow flag infringement.

Norris is now within two seconds of Antonelli; with over 26 laps to go, the Italian might struggle to get to the end here.

Verstappen asks if there's proof he can get to the end on the softs - Bortoleto and Alonso did some pretty long stints on those red-walled boots. 

Soft tyres for Verstappen, by the way - so quite a bold one from Red Bull. 

Norris is reeling Antonelli in, and he's told to be "measured once you get there". 

Piastri is, let's say, not best pleased with the pit timing and the Sainz incident.

Meanwhile, Verstappen pits but has his mirrors full of Leclerc. Antonelli leads. 

Norris comes out ahead of Piastri! Sainz rather hurt Piastri's chances there, it cost the Australian a hefty chunk of time.

That said, Norris did help himself out with pretty strong pace in the interlude.

Bearman has a spin at Turn 2. 

Piastri had to contend with Sainz and an Aston Martin, and Sainz just cut him off completely on the exit of Turn 2. They made contact, and Piastri is furious.

Norris is pitting now. How does this play out?

Leclerc ges the run on Hadjar into Turn 1, and nips past for sixth. 

Piastri has traffic to contend with, which allows Hamilton to draw a lot closer to the McLaren. 

Norris goes for another lap; he'll lose track position to Piastri, but he should be able to stay ahead of Hamilton if he drops in soonish. 

Leclerc has come out behind Hadjar, so he's got an overtake to make soon too. 

Hamilton is told he's fighting for third with Verstappen, and will attempt to manage tyres if the undercut plays out.

Leclerc is told to stop, aiming to ensure he preserves track position over Antonelli.  

Piastri indeed is ahead of Hamilton, but it seems like Norris is going to hang it out for longer in an effort to build a tyre offset. 

Antonelli, meanwhile, is right on Leclerc's tail now.
