Arrows' driver debate continues

After much speculation, at least one half of the question of who will drive for Arrows this season was answered when the team confirmed Enrique Bernoldi on January 11th. But the other driver is yet to be named, amid continuing debates. After saying Bernoldi would stay with the team, Arrows remained unforthcoming about his partner, stating: "The full driver line-up will be announced in the near future".

Jos Verstappen was signed for 2002 in June last year but since then it has emerged that Heinz Harald Frentzen could oust him from his seat. A spokesman for Arrows confirmed that team principal Tom Walkinshaw has been in talks with Frentzen, who drove for Jordan and then Prost last year.

"Jos was confirmed a long time ago," the spokesman said, "but there is no secret to the fact that Tom has been talking to Heinz-Harald. Everyone's going to have to wait and see what happens with that."

Verstappen's manager, however, remains adamant that the Dutchman will remain with Arrows.

"My conclusion is that the Arrows team is complete now. Jos already had a contract and Enrique has signed now as well. Soon Jos will start some serious testing with the A23. Why Arrows haven't mentioned Jos? They don't have to; they already confirmed Jos for 2002 through a press announcement back in June. I have no doubts, I have the fullest confidence that Jos will drive for Arrows in 2002," Huub Rothengatter said.
