The Grand Prix Drivers' Association (GPDA) is calling on the FIA to award more stringent penalties to backmarkers who hamper other drivers. Clarification of the blue flag situation, where backmarkers have to get out of the way, is required and Michael Schumacher has already discussed the situation with FIA race director Charlie Whiting.

"We want a consistent stance on the situation so that everybody knows the rules before Melbourne," said Jaguar's Mark Webber, a member of the GPDA. "I know Michael has spoken to Charlie and I think this is going to mean a lot more disciplinary action in terms of drivers."

"Although backmarkers are part of the Grand Prix, when the leaders come through we need to make sure it is consistent. We want everyone to sing from the same hymn sheet."

There have been many occasions when a driver at the head of the field has been hampered by a slower car in front when coming up to lap them. The blue flag indicates the backmarker should move over and let the faster car through but the signal has sometimes gone unnoticed or even been ignored.
