The West McLaren Mercedes Team enjoyed a good first days practice for the Mobil 1 German Grand Prix. Both Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard headed up the timing sheets with the final fastest laps of the day being 1:43.946 and 1:44.138 respectively.

MIKA HAKKINEN 'We improved the car throughout the session and I am pleased with the performance. Now we are concentrating on setting the car up for tomorrow's qualifying but everything looks very promising.'

DAVID COULTHARD 'A trouble free first day. The only characteristic in the car which we are trying to deal with is some oversteer, but apart from that I am looking forward to tomorrow.'

RON DENNIS 'An uneventful practice with no mechanical problems. We made good progress throughout both sessions as the lap times reflect.'

NORBERT HAUG 'This was a productive first day for us. The team did a good job preparing the cars in race configuration. I am pleased with the 356 km/h top speed which David did, which is I think an all time record, at least for normally aspirated three litre Formula One cars.'
