A routine first day of practice for Jordan Grand Prix as Jarno Trulli and Heinz-Harald Frentzen set fifth and ninth fastest times respectively. Both drivers concentrated on race set-ups on a track which was changing constantly as it cleaned up. 'It's been a positive day,' said Trulli. 'I didn't have any major problems. The main thing we worked on was getting rid of understeer, which is the usual problem on this tight track. But it's a difficult problem to solve because the track conditions are changing all the time. I'm quite happy because, once the car is okay, I usually go well here. Meanwhile, I'd like to say a big "Hello!" to Danny Slater, my No. 2 mechanic who can't be here this weekend.'
The Hungaroring is little used for the rest of the year. As a result, the track tends to be very dusty and dirty until the cars have laid down rubber and cleaned the racing line.
'It's the usual problem here - no different than normal,' said Frentzen, who only completed a handful of laps during the first of the two one-hour sessions. 'We had to work harder than we expected on finding a good balance. We went through a lot of things and made progress today. But qualifying tomorrow is going to be a different issue. So far, though, it has been pretty good.'
