Hungarian Grand Prix Sunday 13 August 1995

Throttle problem stopped Salo, Katayama spun off

Nokia Tyrrell Yamaha drovers Mika Salo and Ukyo Katayama were forced to retire from Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix. Mika was running 11th on lap 58 when a throttle problem stopped him. Ukyo was 13th on lap 48 when the rear of his car bottomed very hard and he lost control of the car, which slid off and hit the guardrails.

Mika and Ukyo made a good start, running 14th and 17th at the end of the first lap. Ukyo stopped for fuel and tyres on lap 23, but crashed on the lap before his second scheduled stop. Mika took fuel and fresh tyres on laps 25 and 50.

Mika Salo: "I made a good start and passed both Minardis. We had very good pit stops and I would like to thank the boys for their superb job. The balance of the car was fine. Then the engine cut out and I stopped. Today I found another second a lap in driving around the circuit. I found a better line in the fast corners at the top of the circuit."

Ukyo Katayama: "I was on my last lap before my second pit stop when the rear of the car bottomed very heavily at the chicane. There was nothing I could do and I lost the car. I kept the engine running but I hit the armco and damaged the car."

Harvey Postlethwaite, Managing Director - Engineering: "Mika drove a strong race with a two stop strategy but unfortunately had a problem with his throttle potentiometer which forced him to retire. Ukyo had also a strong race but complained of a lot of understeer. He used up his front tyres very badly and went off just before his second pit stop."

Mr Kimura - Yamaha F1 Project Leader: "It's a shame that Ukyo did not finish and Mika stopped with an electrical problem. The next step is to improve the engine performance. We are hoping to introduce an upgraded C spec version of the OX10C in the near future."
