Estoril Circuit, 18th - 21st January

Both total Jordan Peugeot drivers were on hand for the team's first test of 1995, which took place last week at the Estoril Circuit in Portugal. Eddie Irvine drove the interim Jordan-Peugeot 194P on Wednesday and Thursday before handing over to Rubens Barrichello for the final two days.

"The main purpose of this test was to evaluate different engine specifications" reported Total Jordan Peugeot Team Manager, John Walton. "Day one was not as productive as it could have been; the car had an electrical problem which required us to repair the main chassis loom. We also had an engine failure. These two things resulted in us only completing eight laps in total that day".

A revised spec Peugeot 3 litre engine was fitted for day two and Irvine was sent out to complete a 90 lap endurance run, including two pit-stops. He came in for the first of those stops after 30 laps, and whilst the car was in the pits, the team discovered a small water leak. "We decided to play safe and remove the engine to repair the problem" said Walton. By the end of the day on Thursday Irvine had completed 38 laps and reported a preference for the second spec. engine over that used on the previous day.

Rubens Barrichello took over the wheel on day three. "We intended to carry on and complete the remaining 60 laps of our endurance run" said Walton, "but unfortunately the circuit was closed early for the lunch break. Rubens had only completed 20 laps, but he had to come back to the pits". During the lunch-break the engine was inspected. A malfunction was detected so the engine was removed for further evaluation back in Paris.

Whilst fitting the third and final specification engine, the team also fitted several new components to the car in order that they could be evaluated for potential use on the 195 chassis. "All in all the final day of the test was by far the most productive" related Walton. "Rubens preferred the 'third spec' engine to the previous ones and we managed to get through quite a large programme of work. Rubens set his best time of 1'22.00 and completed 32 laps in total on Saturday.

"The main aim of this test was not to set fastest lap times, but to evaluate components which will be incorporated into both the '95 engine and the '95 chassis" said Walton. "Whilst we had a few problems with both the car and the engine over the course of the four days, both Peugeot and Jordan learned a lot. Now we will concentrate all our efforts on building the 195 to the standard required for the car to be a front-runner this season" he concluded.

Best lap times:

1.'Jules' Boullion (Williams-Renault 3.5 litre) 1'19.99 Wed
2. David Coulthard (Williams-Renault 3 litre) 1'20.62 Fri
3. Rubens Barrichello (Jordan-Peugeot 3 litre) 1'22.OO Sat
4. Eddie Irvine (Jordan-Peugeot 3 litre) 1'25.7O Thurs
