The fans may be getting excited ahead of the first race at Melbourne's Albert Park on March 3rd, but they are not the only ones. BMW Williams' Chief Operations Engineer Sam Michael says that teams are excited too and everyone wants to know how they have progressed after the winter.

"Melbourne is the start of the season and is usually exciting for all the teams because everyone wants to know where they stand after the winter break." He said.

Albert Park is a maximum downforce circuit and Michael explained things that need to be taken into consideration.

"Albert Park is a street circuit which usually means low grip. The layout is predominately a combination of slow and medium speed corners but with two high speed sections that must be catered for in the race car’s setup. Maximum downforce is required along with a mechanical setup geared towards giving good traction out of slow speed sectors while not compromising the mid corner balance. The number of braking events from speed means the circuit is hard on brakes, maybe not the toughest circuit but it can’t be ignored.

"Going into their second year back in Formula One, I am sure Michelin will supply a tyre that is a step forwards from last year’s.

"Engine power is important to be able to pull the high wing levels. This consideration also makes it difficult but not impossible to overtake. Some good overtaking moves have been seen here in the past and the difference in opinion of race strategy usually makes for an exciting opening race."
