Mexico targets Formula E, WTCC and WEC race dates

Jose Abed, the head of the Mexican ASN and one of the vice presidents of FIA, has said that Mexico would target more international events as it aims to ride of the back of the success of its already sold-out 2015 Grand Prix date.

Most likely for 2016 is a WTCC round, and it is understood that a Mexican date has been included on the draft calendar that goes before the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council for ratification.

Whether the WTCC might return to the Puebla track, where it raced four times between 2005 and 2009, or switch to Mexico City is yet to be revealed.

Formula E and WEC on radar too

FIA Formula E is also a very strong candidate for a Mexican round next year – the all-electric single-seater series seems set to run on a shortened version of the Mexico City track next February. An alternative would be around the streets of Mexico City itself.

The potential return of a world sportscar championship to the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, for the first time since 1991, has been tipped for 2017. Meanwhile, CIE Group – the promoter of the upcoming Formula 1 Grand Prix – is also believed to have spoken to MotoGP organisers Dorna about the potential for a future Mexican bike Grand Prix.
