EU V6: Spa qualifying summary

Double Pole for Jani

Qualifying 1.

The legendary Spa Francorchamps circuit was the scene today of another incredible head-to head, as Neel Jani and Ryan Sharp battled it out in the first of this weekend's timed qualifiers. The session, ahead of Friday afternoon's Super Sprint, saw both drivers complete the 6.976km lap in 02'11''025: identical times down to 1/1000th of a second! But the pole went to Jani (Dams), the Swiss driver having completed his lap just a few seconds before Sharp (Jenzer Motorsport).

There was excitement from the other drivers as well, with Mondini (EuroInternational) taking third fastest time ahead of Shimoda (David Price Racing) and Belicchi (AFC Motorsport). A spectacular crash by Maldonado in free practise earlier put paid to his racing this weekend, while Sharp's fastest time of 02'10''929 was disallowed, the Scotsman having run too wide on the track.

Qualifying 2.

Barth showed concern about his car in the pre-grid assembly, which had been suffering some difficulties. But the drivers finally made their way to the pitlane, and out came Neel Jani. An early appearance gave him the top spot, ahead of his closest rivals Sharp and Mondini. In the end Jani held his 6th pole position in 7 qualifiers, with a lap of 2'10''806. Next came Mondini, with Sharp third on the grid and Belicchi fourth. The end of the session saw Montanri (Victory Eng.SpA) improve, ahead of Shimoda (David Price Racing) and Barth (Interwetten.com).
