ATCC: Series cancelled

The Asia-Pacific Touring Car Championship, which was to have included four rounds in November and December, has been cancelled by the FIA because of low entries. The series was to have comprised meetings at Fuji (Japan), Macau, Australia and the street race in Wellington, New Zealand. Last year the series was won by Jo Winkelhock in a Schnitzer BMW The low entries are a little surprising in view of the enthusiasm the Japanese factories now have for the Asia-Pacific rally championship, with involvement by Subaru, Mitsubishi and Toyota. Organisers of the Wellington race say they no longer expect any entries from Europe, breaking a tradition that goes back to the mid-80s. Wellington was a round of the world touring cr championship held in 1987. New Zealand and Australian organisers are now discussing a seven-round Tasman Series in the two countries, starting at Wellington on December 3.
