The power of a brand new stoker engine has placed Melbourne driver Stephen Vines into 5th position for tomorrows Phillip Island 50K plate. Vines' "Gypsum Australia, Pitlane PR" V8 Cortina just failed to beat home VMRC series rival Dean Camm, who's lighter, more modern mid-engined Chev powered Honda Prelude will start in 4th.

In what must rank as one of the most unusual sights in modern motorsport, two SAABs will line up on the front row for the feature race at Island magic.

South Australian Dean Randle edged out fellow SAAB driver Darren Hossack to grab pole on the fast Island circuit.

Local Veteran Bob Jolly in a rare 2001 appearance showed that he'd lost none of his pace with third position in his VS Commodore ahead of the beautiful Jaguar XKR of NSW driver Daniel Jameson.

In the battle of the rotaries Ron Newbound is in seventh place with the V8 Commodores of Robert Smith and new VMRC champion Michael Robinson separating Newbound from the other RX7 of Richard Catchlove.
