AIM & Doncaster - Birmingham GT qualifying

AIM Autosport may be a rookie in Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series competition, but the Canadian team has already earned a podium finish at this week's race venue, Barber Motorsports Park. In 2004, AIM finished second and third in a North American Formula Renault Championship race on the Birmingham, Ala., road course. Mark Wilkins of Toronto scored the second-place finish before graduating to his current position as AIM's lead Daytona Prototype driver in the Rolex Series. He and Burt Frisselle of Lynchburg, Va., will drive the No. 61 Lexus-powered Riley Mk XI in the Rolex Series DP race on Sunday.

GT qualifying

Doncaster Racing will start ninth in Saturday's Rolex Series GT race at Barber Motorsports Park. Dave Lacey of Toronto qualified the No. 17 MineStar / Tim Hortons Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car in one minute 30.718 seconds on the 2.3-mile road course. He will drive the first stint of the 2.5-hour race, followed by Greg Wilkins of Toronto and Darren Law of Phoenix.

"We had a reasonable qualifying -- we're right with all the other Porsches, which is important. Obviously, GM's got a good product for this race track," Lacey said. "We had some brake-bias issues that we needed to get sorted out before qualifying, so we made some big changes last-minute and they paid off. I think we could have gone a little bit more quickly, but we got caught up in traffic on that all-important second lap. But we're ninth on the grid and we have a good race car."

Porsche Cup contender

Darren Law will compete in two races this weekend, adding his stint with Doncaster Racing in the Rolex Series GT race to his usual duty driving a Porsche-powered Daytona Prototype. Law is a top-three contender for the prestigious Porsche Cup, awarded to the international driver who earns the most points driving Porsches during the season. He hopes a strong result this weekend will help his quest for 2007 honours.
