The SAMAX Motorsport cars posted solid results during the first six hours of the Rolex 24 At Daytona. Brian Tuttle started the No. 11 Tuttle Team Racing/SAMAX BMW-powered Riley Mk XI 26th, followed by his co-drivers Boris Said and Kyle Petty, who moved up to 10th in the first quarter of the race. Tuttle started his second stint and was holding 12th place at 6h.
The No. 17 SAMAX Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car charged from ninth to fourth in GT in the first five minutes of the race, with Johnny Mowlem at the wheel. An expected "waveby" didn't happen during the first caution and two penalties dropped him back a lap, but he and Bryan Sellers, Lance David Arnold and Jan Seyffarth regained 11th place at 6h. Dave Lacey raced the No. 71 SAMAX/Doncaster Porsche from 13th to sixth in GT early in the race. He, Mark Wilkins, Brent Martini and Greg Wilkins drove consistent stints to hold ninth at 6h.
Kyle Petty (No. 11): "With that many cars out there, surprisingly everybody is driving really well and giving everyone a lot of room. I tell you what, Boris did a great job setting this car up -- an idiot could drive it! It's just been a lot of fun so far."
Bryan Sellers (No. 17): "We had a good strategy going in and it looked like things were going to fall in the right direction for us, but we got caught with an waveby that didn't happen. But we're still running six hours in and the car seems to be able to run pretty decent times. As long as we stay where we are, the nighttime could fall our way."
Greg Wilkins (No. 71): "We've cycled through all the drivers now and the times have been pretty consistent, which was the plan. We've moved up from 13th to ninth and there's still a long way to go. We just did a double stint on the tires and we're still running consistent times, so we'll probably double-stint through the night."
