LGTRS: Lamborghini Supertrophy Spa preview

With a three-way tie for first place in the overall drivers' standings, things are really hotting up as we approach the third round of the Lamborghini GTR Supertrophy at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium this weekend, June 9/10. Vital points are at stake and with more than 20 magnificent Lamborghini Diablo GTRs locking horns at speeds in excess of 190km/h, this weekend's two races look set to be thrillers.

The second of the European rounds in the series is going to prove a tough challenge for professional and gentleman drivers alike around the 6.96km Spa circuit. With some of the most notorious corners in the world, including Eau Rouge and La Source, there isn't a single driver who doesn't treat this circuit with respect.

April's thrilling races at Monza have set the stage for what should be a truly amazing clash of V12 titans. After team pairings of Italy's Vincenzo Tirella and Vittorio Zoboli (Mig Power) and Belgium's own Michel Neugarten and Paulo Rapetti (I) (Larbre Competition) took a win apiece, we now have three teams equal on 28 points: Tirella and Zoboli, the Riverside team of Philippe Charriol, Jean Marc Gounon and Paul Stockell and the Mig Power team of brothers, Pietro and Michele Gianni.

Hot on their heels is gentleman driver and relative newcomer to the professional world of motor racing, Stephane Lang Willar. In only his second season of racing, the Frenchman is also leading the Gentleman's category by 14 points ahead of the Classic Car team of Patrick Spadacini, Michael Eschmann and David Lemm.

Also carving a name for himself is Lee Cunningham in the MRI sponsored Riverside Lamborghini. A Lamborghini technician by weekday, the Briton is fast catching third placed Gentlemen drivers, Patrick Brisset and Gerard Larrousse.

This weekend's entry sees three Belgian drivers supporting their home race with former Le Mans class winner and stuntman, Michel Neugarten heading up the Belgian contingent and joined by the Autovitesse pairing of Cedric Lorent and Luc Dewinter.

Making his Lamborghini debut in the official VIP car is the respected Automobil Revue journalist and former Motorsport Aktuell editor, Peter Wyss from Switzerland. His surprise VIP partner for the weekend has yet to be announced.
