McDowell Dominates Star Mazda Race at Phoenix
AVONDALE, Ariz. (Oct. 4, 2004) -- Michael McDowell started on the pole, led every lap and won the Star Mazda North American Championship presented by Goodyear race at Phoenix International Raceway.
Goodyear is the exclusive tire provider for Star Mazda racing and is the presenting sponsor. The Star Mazda North American Championship presented by Goodyear is a circuit for open-wheeled cars. The schedule includes races on both road courses and ovals.
The race at PIR was the seventh win of the season for McDowell in nine races. He now leads the drivers championship standings with a 23-point advantage over Daniel DiLeo.
The 75-lap race at Phoenix was held under standard weather conditions for the Arizona desert: An ambient temperature of 90 degrees at race time. The track temperature was 110 degrees, but teams were still able to go the distance on one set of Goodyear Eagles.
In the race, Scott Jenkins finished second, Jonathan Klein was third, DiLeo was fourth and Nick Steele came home fifth.
The race will be broadcast on SPEED Channel at 2 p.m. Eastern Time on Oct. 17.
