New Testing Limits

Detroit, MI (October 22, 1998) - During last weekend's Honda Indy at Surfers Paradise, Australia, the Championship Auto Racing Teams Board of Directors adopted a resolution proposed by the Rules and Technical Committee to increase the number of testing blackout days during the 1999 season.

As usual, next season's blackout periods will include all designated holidays and the two weeks following the end of the season. Additionally, the seven-day period before and three-day period after any overseas race will be blacked out as well as all days between consecutive events at Toronto and Michigan Speedway and at Detroit, Mid-Ohio and Chicago.

Each two-car team will be limited to 50 days of testing while each one-car team will be limited to 40 test days. A rookie driver will be entitled to 10 additional days of testing under the new policy, and tire testing will be limited to 10 days per manufacturer, with a maximum of three cars per test. The object of the increased blackout period is to reduce costs while providing teams and manufacturers some relief during a season which includes a record 20 FedEx Championship Series events.
