Successful outing for Team Willis at Gingerman.
(South Haven, MI) September 23, 2002 - Team Willis/CRG Racing K1 (80cc Senior) class driver Matt Melster of Waukesha WI finished 2nd in the feature race at round 7 of the Super Karts USA (SKUSA) Great Lakes Region race at the 1.9 mile Gingerman Raceway in South Haven Michigan on Sunday. Team mate Chris Leonard of Loveland OH finished 1st in the S1 (125 moto) class feature.
The 2nd place finish for Matt Melster allowed him to clinch the 2002 Great Lakes SKUSA K1 title. Leonard's win Sunday moves him within a few points of 1st place in the S1 title chase with just one race remaining. Melster's title win gives Team Willis its 2nd 80 Senior title in as many years. Chris Leonard was last years 80 Senior Champion for the SKUSA Great Lakes Region.
Sunday's events were hampered by rain and caused the race director to eliminate all practice and qualifying and go straight to the shortened feature races. Multiple classes were again run together to offset the long rain delays. Melster struggled with a missed kart setup and an ill handling kart as a result of lose of any prerace track time. Leonard, however, put on a good race setup thanks to running an event at Gingerman on Saturday afternoon.
Team Willis heads to Camden Ohio for the 2002 Great Lakes SKUSA season finale October 4th and 5th.
