THOMSON TAKES SUBWAY 200 POLE
NELLES CORNERS, Ontario (Sept. 1, 2007) -- Don Thomson Jr. (No. 4 Home Hardware Chevrolet) picked up his second Bud Pole Award of the season this afternoon at Cayuga Speedway Park during qualifying for the Subway 200 presented by Sicard Holiday Campers.
Hailing from Ayr, Ontario, Thomson turned a lap on the 5/8-mile oval in 20.864 seconds for an average lap speed of 107.841 mph. With the effort, Thomson breaks his teammate J.R. Fitzpatrick's (No. 84 Milwaukee Electric Tools Chevrolet) run of three straight NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Sirius Satellite Radio poles.
Fitzpatrick will sit on the outside pole with his time of 20.995 seconds (107.373 mph).
"The car was good right out of the box," said Thomson. "It was even comfortable enough from the very start of practice that we really didn't want to push it too hard."
The track, which changed throughout the day as the sun was in and out of the clouds, will certainly tighten up with the cooler evening temperatures.
"The track changed quite a bit over the course of the day," he said. "It was as free as it was all day during qualifying, but it'll tighten up by race time."
The third-fastest time recorded by D.J. Kennington (No. 17 Castrol/Krispy Kreme Dodge Charger) with a time of 21.036 seconds (106.959 mph). Peter Gibbons (No. 1 Canadian Tire/Master Craft Chevrolet) and Kerry Micks (No. 02 Beyond Digital Imaging Ford) rounded out the top five.
