NASCAR announces rule change

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 3, 1998) NASCAR officials announced Monday that modifications to rear spoiler heights will go into effect on both the Ford Taurus and Ford Thunderbird beginning in this weekend's PRIMESTAR 500 NASCAR Winston Cup Series event at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

The rear spoilers on both Ford makes will be lowered by .25-inch. The Ford Taurus will now maintain a 4.75-inch spoiler height, down from 5.0 inches. The Thunderbird will maintain a 4.5-inch rear spoiler height, down from 4.75 inches.

Ground clearance for front air dams for both makes will remain at 5.0 inches.

The Chevrolet Monte Carlo will continue with a 5.0-inch rear spoiler and the Pontiac Grand Prix will use a 5.375-inch rear spoiler. Front air dam clearance will remain at 5.0 inches for the Monte Carlo and 4.625 inches for Grand Prix.

These spoiler heights will be in effect for all NASCAR Winston Cup Series races except for events at Daytona International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway. NASCAR will continue to evaluate these changes, but they will be in effect until further notice.
