PONTIAC EXCITEMENT 400, Richmond, Va. --
Winning at Richmond International Raceway seemed only fitting for Ernie Irvan and his Robert Yates Racing team. It was Irvan's first at the .75-mile track and the second in a row for team owner Robert Yates, whose driver in 1993 was the late Davey Allison. Perhaps not the best of anniversary, but victory made it meaningful.
Irvan evolved as the race's dominant driver, leading 189 of 400 laps. Over the final laps, he pulled away from Wallace to win by 1.7 seconds. Wallace was second with Jeff Gordon third, Dale Earnhardt fourth and Kyle Petty fifth.
With finishes of second, fifth and first in the first three races of the season, Irvan was propelled to the top of the Winston Cup point standings, well ahead of Dale Earnhardt.
