Cajon April 19th preview

EL CAJON, CA. The local stock car racing season got underway last Saturday night at Cajon Speedway. This week, it will be round two of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing Series at the 3/8-mile paved oval.

Featured once again will Cajon's premier division, the late model sportsman. The pony stocks will also return for their second race of the season. Taking to the pavement for the first time in 2003 will be the open wheeled Grand American modifieds, the factory stocks, and the Allison legacy cars.

Racing gets underway at 6:45 PM. Qualifying runs start an hour and an half earlier. The track will open for practice at 4:00. Admission prices remain the same as last year - $10 for adults on the east side and $9 on the west side. Kids from 6 --12 are only $3. Children under the age of 6 are free when accompanied by an adult.

A 40-lap feature for the late model sportsman will cap the evening. The Grand American modifieds will run a 25-lap main event. Twenty lap affairs are booked for the pony stocks, factory stocks, and legacy cars.

In the Grand American modifieds, defending champion Spring Valley's Scott Brown leads the field. The 27-year-old San Diego native out-pointed Mike Salm a year ago en route to his first track title. Salm, from Fallbrook, earned honors in the division in 2000; he will be back this year trying to regain the number one position.

Other top runners in the division include Mike Jackson of Bonita and Brian Pusey of Lemon Grove.

Cajon continues to prepare for its doubleheader the weekend of April 25 and 26. On Friday night, KGB Radio, the Fun Bike Center, and Evans Tire have joined together to bring NASCAR stars Ken Schrader, Sterling Marlin, Jimmy Spencer, and Kenny Wallace to the track for an exhibition race and autograph session. Advance tickets can be purchased at any San Diego County Evans Tire Center for $20. Tickets at the track on April 25 will be $25.
