Morgan wants Lucas Oil Mustang in Brainerd's winner's circle
BRAINERD, Minn. (Aug. 10) -- Although he's not going to be part of the Countdown to 1 playoffs this season, Pro Stock veteran Larry Morgan is still working hard on his Lucas Oil Ford Mustang to turn it into a winner before the car's debut season is over.
To reach his goal, Morgan took his red, white, and blue 2010 Mustang out for some extra runs before the start of this weekend's 29th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway.
"We went up to Michigan to test," Morgan said. "We've got our carburetor guy with us and we're trying to learn a little more about that part of the engine combination. You have to have all these parts working together and that's been an area where we've had some issues."
After a rough stretch early in the season where he was struggling to find the right set-up to make the qualified field at a handful of national events, Morgan has successfully qualified for six straight races and is building data for his new engine and chassis at a rapid pace.
"We're looking to have this car in good shape for Brainerd," Morgan said. "Forrest and Charlotte Lucas will be there and they have sure done a lot for me. I want to make certain we run well for them at their title race because I know what this event means to them. It'll be nice to have a big breakthrough at this race."
In addition to his desire for a big weekend on the drag strip, Morgan said he always enjoys the environment in Brainerd.
"It's a laidback race," he said. "The fans are crazy. They like to have fun up there and that carries over into the pits. You find yourself smiling and laughing at every turn. It's always a bunch of fun. I'm looking forward to getting up there."
