Capps Suffers First Round Setback At Bristol
BRISTOL, Tenn. (May 3, 2004) -- Ron Capps and the Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo Funny Car fell in the opening round of eliminations Monday at Bristol Dragway.
Faced with cold, tricky track conditions, Capps' Skoal Racing flopper overpowered the track and lost traction early in the run allowing veteran driver Gary Densham to drive by for the victory. Capps coasted to a run of 11.391 seconds at 76.11 mph, while Densham recorded a performance of 4.827 at 319.07 to take the win.
"Friday night, we made a really good run and learned a lot from it," Capps said. "Even though I shut off early, we were encouraged from the numbers. With the cool conditions today, we thought the car would run a 4.78 to 4.80. A few pairs before us, the right lane started to get a bald spot near the starting line and we pulled the tires loose early in the run. This is another learning experience for our car."
The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the 24th annual Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals, May 13-16, at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga.
