Capps Suffers Qualifying Setback at Denver Race
MORRISON, Colo. (July 17, 2004) -- Ron Capps and the green Skoal RacingSM crew experienced a setback during qualifying Saturday at Bandimere Speedway after failing to make the cut for Sunday's final eliminations.
After losing both of Friday's scheduled qualifying sessions due to rain, the green Skoal Racing crew still faced the tricky conditions of racing at the mile-high facility, along with using a brand new Goodyear tire mandated by the NHRA after rule changes following the St. Louis race three weeks ago. Capps drove his Chevy flopper to a run of 5.751 seconds at 258.96 mph on his first pass of the weekend, and suffered a mechanical failure on his final qualifying effort and slowed to a pass of 7.568 at 141.42. It's the first time since the Brainerd, Minn. race last August that Capps has failed to qualify for eliminations.
The green Skoal Racing crew will regroup and head to the Pacific Northwest for the 17th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals, July 23-25, at Pacific Raceways in Kent, Wash. near Seattle. Capps is a two-time winner of the Seattle race and the only driver to win in both Top Fuel and Funny Car.
