Herbert Mourns Loss of Friend and Competitor
ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (June 21, 2008) Tragedy marked Saturday's qualifying action for the Lucas Oil NHRA SuperNationals in Englishtown, N.J.
Scott Kalitta, a long time competitor in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing series, succumbed to injuries sustained in a crash during the fourth funny car qualifying session.
Doug Herbert, owner and driver of the SnaponFranchise.com dragster, considered Kalitta one of his close and personal friends.
"I'm devastated," said Herbert. "Scott was one of my friends for the longest time. James and Jon loved Scott. He was always really nice to them and they had fun.
"Scott was one of the nicest people to me when I first started out racing. I'm just devastated. I feel like Jon and James will be the first ones to welcome him.
"It will be hard to get back in the race car."
Herbert qualified for the Lucas Oil SuperNationals in the No. 14 position. He will face Doug Foley in the opening round of eliminations.
