Fast but Not Fast Enough
Indianapolis 9/5/05 The Powers Motorsports Valvoline/Mac Tools Top Fuel Dragster headed into the second round of eliminations with four successful qualifying passes and a new career best elapsed time of 4.52 to meet two-time National Champion Tony Schumacher and the Army Dragster. Schumacher ran a 4.56 to beat the smooth running Valvoline dragster's 4.59.
"The car performed really well this weekend, said Lee Beard, crew-chief for Powers Motorsports. "We made four good passes in qualifying and set a new career best elapsed time of 4.52, but when it came to the second round of eliminations we under estimated the strength of the track and didn't put in enough power. This is a tough industry, everything hundredth of a second counts and we went up against one of the best; overall we didn't do too bad."
Two weeks previous to the U.S. Nationals the Powers team notched their first National Event win in Memphis, TN after only competing in ten races.
"The team has been on a high ever since Memphis, said team owner David Powers. "We all had hopes for another win this weekend, especially since it was the nationals, but at the end of the day everyone on the team was happy with how the car performed. I would also like to say a special thank you to everyone at Valvoline and Mac Tools for all of their support; they have all been a big part of our team's success."
The team's next outing will be the in Dallas, TX at the NHRA O'Reilly Fall Nationals September 22-25.
