WJ Has a Solid Opening Day in Sonoma, Sits Sixth
Warren Johnson and the GM Performance Parts GTO Racing team continued their string of recent solid performances during the first day of qualifying for the Fram Autolite Nationals in Sonoma, CA, opening their qualifying effort with two good runs. After recording the tenth-quickest time in the afternoon session, Johnson took advantage of the cooler conditions in their evening attempt, with his 6.648-second, 207.05 mph pass slotting him in the sixth position midway through qualifying.
Although pleased with his opening effort, The Professor immediately turned his attention towards Saturday twin time trials, looking for ways to further improve his standing.
"We had two completely different tuning scenarios today, with the corrected altitude going from 2179 feet in the afternoon session to about 1200 tonight, which is a huge change. Still, it wasn't a bad opening day overall, and our GM Performance Parts GTO is giving us some room to start dialing it in.
"We have an entirely different tune-up in it right now, so I definitely think we have room for improvement. If the forecast for tomorrow proves to be right, the morning session could be the best of the weekend. However, before making any decisions, we'll wait and see what we have to work with in the morning, and take if from there."
