Capps Suffers Early Defeat at Topeka
TOPEKA, Kan. (May 30, 2004) -- Ron Capps was unsuccessful in his bid to capture his second career victory at Heartland Park Topeka on Sunday as his green Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo was defeated in round one of Funny Car eliminations by fellow Chevy driver Del Worsham.
Capps used a significant starting-line advantage to take the early lead on Worsham until the Don Prudhomme Racing driver's Skoal Racing flopper started to spin the tires, allowing Worsham to drive around for the victory. Worsham clocked a performance of 4.810 seconds at 319.29, while the 14-time NHRA winner slowed to a run of 5.398 at 206.23.
"Roland (Leong) is still getting used to our car," Capps said. "We knew we were going to have to run a low 4.80 to beat Del (Worsham). We needed to step on it and we took a stab at it and spun the tires. We've already made progress in the pits. We'll test Monday here in Topeka, and I'm really looking forward to Columbus in a few weeks."
The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the 40th annual Pontiac Excitement Nationals, June 10-13, at National Trail Raceway near Columbus, Ohio.
