Capps Drives To No. 12 Spot at Topeka
TOPEKA, Kan. (May 29, 2004) - Ron Capps drove his Roland Leong-tuned green Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo to the No. 12 qualifying position Saturday at Heartland Park after recording a qualifying-best run of 4.918 seconds at 314.53 mph.
Capps drove his Don Prudhomme-owned flopper to the 4.918, 314.53 effort on Friday. He followed that up by making two consistent passes at the Kansas facility on Saturday. Capps drove to a run of 4.977 at 308.28 on Saturday's first qualifying attempt. The 14-time NHRA winner completed qualifying by posting a performance of 5.004 at 303.09.
"This is Roland's (Leong) first weekend with the crew," Capps said. "He's working with Todd Okuhara and Dave Hutchens and they're doing a great job. Todd was brought in by Roland from Hawaii years ago to work on my car. So, it's neat to get those two back together. We weren't the quickest every session, but we're working on our consistency and we made it down the track three times. We want the car to go down the track to where it will make people have to beat us."
Capps looks to earn his second career win at Heartland Park when he faces No. 5 qualifier Del Worsham in the opening round of Funny Car eliminations which begin at 11 a.m. (CT) on Sunday. Capps has a 15-4 career record versus Worsham.
