For years the locals have been terrified of the monsters that we bring to churn up the Topusko forests so the Croatia Trophy boss Igor Bozikovic had the great idea of having a little parade to show them that (for the most part) we’re all regular people.

The blue skies were complemented the cheap beer and the mayor gave us a greeting and then all pretence at civility was abandoned and it was time for the muddy brutality to begin… a short 1km course to determine the ranking order for the first proper stage the day after.

Some blitzed it, some had to winch up the first little hill, a couple never made it up and a couple more ended on their roofs. And if that wasn’t enough the skies were rent open and we were scourged by an End of Days hailstorm, balls the size of marbles!

Igor said it was going to be wet and so the ones who did well here get to go in the best positions for the first stage, as after a few teams have passed the track will be destroyed!

To look at, I guessed that the Gaz 69 of Victor Horoetevcev in the car that won here in 2012 was the fastest but actually it was the Land Rover of David Needham and Karl Frost ... which was of course was their plan … as it is to win all the other stages.
