Traditionally Mine plays the role as a yardstick to judge the foreign driving talent. Eddie Irvine once was the main man there. Mika Salo shone, too. Heinz-Harald Frentzen let us know he was a diamond in the rough in rainy Mine 1993.

This year was no exception as Ralf Schumacher climbed from the eighth grid at the start to mark the much anticipated first victory in the round two of Formula Nippon with his archrival in last year's German F3, Norberto Fontana, in second. That place would have gone to teammate Pedro de la Rosa but his Lola stopped while chasing Schumacher at the last corner of the final lap. He was classified just outside the points in seventh. Those three showed well what they are capable of.

Earlier in the race Toranosuke Takagi was running second when he almost went off where the marshalls were hard at work towing away a stranded car under the local yellow. The stewards didn't like it and gave him a ten second penalty which set the young Japanese on fire. Takagi flew past everybody in front except Schumacher and Fontana (plus de la Rosa if he had continued) to the third place finish.
