Cooper Series Races at Sebring a Success
ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. (March 25, 2004) - Racing at the historic Sebring International Raceway, the season-opening event for the Cooper Tires Championship Series proved to be a great success. As part of the prestigious Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring, the Formula Ford Zetec Championship had two first-time race winners, while the Formula SCCA Championship had a double race winner.
Racing on Thursday and Friday, the Zetec Championship featured a field of greater than 20 cars battling for the wins. In race one, a great fight for the lead ensued, with several drivers in contention throughout the race. At the checkered flag, rookie Jason Bowles, of Ontario, Calif., had captured both his and JDC Motorsports first-ever Zetec Championship win. In race two, the battle for the lead was once again a hard fought affair. Passing numerous cars, Andrew Prendeville, of Monroeville, Pa., captured the win, the first of his Zetec Championship career and the first for Andersen Walko Racing since 2001. With the win and third place finish in race two, Bowles leads the championship standings with 54 points, ahead of Bobby Wilson and Adam Pecorari.
Competing on Wednesday and Thursday, the inaugural Formula SCCA doubleheader included some great side-by-side racing. In race one, a multi-car incident on the opening lap diminished the field, but not the racing, as three drivers took turns leading the race. Capturing the win in the nine-lap race for Dolphin Motorsports was Elivan Goulart, of Huntington, Conn. In race two, Goulart once again captured the win, after falling back to fourth place in the early stages. By winning both races at Sebring, Goulart leads the championship standings with 61 points, ahead of David Jurca and Chris Meredith.
The Cooper Tires Championship Series next event is April 23-25, at Road Atlanta, as part of the Drift Atlanta weekend.
