RACE: Dc Region hosts ProSpec Miata Championship

ProSpec Miata to Visit Summit Point Raceway

13 February 2002: The Washington DC Region of the Sports Car Club of America announced today that the Region would be hosting a ProSpec Miata Championship race in 2002. The October 12-13, 2002 event, held in conjunction with the final round of the Mid-Atlantic Road Racing Series, also will be the final round of the inaugural season of ProSpec Miata Championship. The race will be held on the challenging 2-mile Summit Point Raceway in Summit Point, West Virginia and will be open to spectators.

"The Region is excited to be a part of ProSpec Miata's inaugural season and with DC Region adding a Spec Miata class to the 2002 MARRS Championship, the turnout should be great," said Jeff Janoska, Public Relations Chair for the Region. The Region is expecting as many as 20 home-grown Spec Miata's to compete in the MARRS Championship and with the ProSpec Miata series normal entrants, the field may approach 40 or more cars.

The 2002 season will be the first appearance of the class in an SCCA-sanctioned sprint race, but it won't be the first time Spec Miata's have raced at Summit Point under the SCCA sanction. Several Spec Miata's entered the Region's grueling 12 Hours at the Point in 2001. The cars proved remarkably durable and quick -- placing third and fourth overall in the fifty-one car field.
