San Jose: Tim Barber race notes

Tim Barber leads Trans-Am Series, GT America Championship

San Francisco, CA August 3, 2005 -- Tim Barber continues to lead the Trans-AM Series, GT America Championship after a difficult weekend at the San Jose Grand Prix. Tim, driving the number 97, Riverside Motorsports Park, Pontiac Grand Prix, was second quickest in the first practice session on the 1.4 mile street course.

Unfortunately, an axle snapped on the first lap of qualifying, relegating Tim to the back of the grid for the start of the race. Starting 27th, Tim quickly improved his position on a street circuit that many declared to have no passing opportunities.

Tim charged to 8th overall and 3rd in class over the course of the race. Again, a mechanical breakdown occurred, another broken axle, this time on the white flag lap. Tim finished 10th overall and 5th in class. Along with his hard charge from the rear, Tim also set the fastest lap of the race for the GT America cars.

The race will air on Sunday, Aug. 7 at 1 p.m. on SPEED.

In spite of the mechanical issues, Tim retains his championship points lead by 23 points with two thirds of the series complete, three races remaining. Tim is also running in two USAC championship series, the Western Sprints where he is currently 4th overall and the Silver Crown series with a limited schedule.
