RAY, WUERDEMAN SCORE MIDWEST VICTORIES; LAKEVILLE, KALAMAZOO UP NEXT
Robbie Ray of Davenport, Iowa and Ronnie Wuerdeman of Cincinnati, Ohio scored their first USAC Midwest Ford Focus Midget Car Series victories over the weekend, as the series hit its stride with two of six races over a three-week period. The series continues Friday at Lakeville, Ohio and Saturday at Kalamazoo, Mich.
Wuederman, in the No. 33 Hawk/Ford Focus owned by his mother Meg, led the final 18 laps off Friday's 25-lapper at Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for his first career USAC victory. He trailed Oklahoma licensed driver Chett Gehrke for the first seven before putting his car out front. Derek Fisher, Stephanie Mockler, points leader Tate Martz and Jimmy Light rounded out the Top 5.
Ray, who Saturday won a USAC Carolina/Virginia Ford Focus feature at South Boston, Va., flew up to Sun Prairie and led the final eight laps after passing Martz on a late-race restart. Ray drove the No. 11x Calico Coatings/Simpson Beast/Ford Focus to the victory ahead of Martz, Mockler, Brandon Hartsell and Kevin Studley in the 25-lap feature. Ray and Hartsell won eight-lap heats.
Martz clinched the 2004 Midwest title at Lakeville, which has been a staple on the series schedule since 2003. The 3/8-mile Kalamazoo paved oval is hosting its first Ford Focus event Saturday.
