Williams Wire-To-Wire in Nevada's "Southwest Sprint"
Rick Williams of San Leandro, Calif., runner-up to Kevin Urton in USAC's inaugural Western Sprint Car Championship in 1996, returned to competition USAC Saturday night and promptly won the Southwest Sprint Car Series' first race in the state of Nevada!
Williams was one of eight drivers who put on a spectacular 30-lap feature at the 3/8-mile dirt Reno-Fernley Raceway in Fernley, Nevada. He led all 30 laps but had to withstand determined challenges from runner-up Leighton Crouch and third-place finisher Beau Binder.
Binder, the series point leader, also won a heat race and emerged with a 19-point lead over Dave Burns in the new standings going into scheduled Texas races in mid-June.
Burns finished fourth at Reno-Fernley, while Matt Fontaine was fifth. Danny Olmstead was the fastest qualifier and Binder and Williams won preliminary heats.
