Davis, Krob Share Hawaii Glory
Charles Davis, Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz. and Hawaii's Dennis Krob captured feature events in USAC's "Hawaiian Sprint Car Challenge II" at Hawaii Motor Speedway west of Honolulu Friday and Saturday nights.
Davis led the final 14 laps of Friday's 30-lapper in his Ron's Fuel Injection Buckley after passing James Pontin on lap 17. Krob led the final 19 laps of Saturday night's 40-lapper to beat Rodney Capello and Ikaika O'Brien. Davis, who was trailed on Friday by Don Grable and Brandon Ternora, was Saturday night's highest finishing stateside driver, taking fourth.
Defending USAC Southwest Sprint Car Champion Rick Ziehl finished fifth Friday and seventh Saturday and was Saturday night's fastest qualifier. Dean Freitas, winner of the 40-lapper in 2003, was Friday's fastest qualifier.
Leighton Crouch escaped serious injury in a flip during practice Friday on the 1/4-mile dirt oval located in Oahu's Campbell Industrial Park.
