Maier, Martin split Southwest Sprint races

INDIANAPOLIS - Garry Lee Maier of Cimarron, Kans. and Mike Martin of Yuma, Ariz. each scored their first USAC Southwestern Sprint Car Series wins of the season and their careers over the weekend in Lubbock, Texas.

Maier won Friday's event at Lubbock Motor Speedway, leading the final three laps of the event for his first career USAC win. Maier was trailed by Rick Ziehl, Brandon Lane, Shon Deskins and Kaylene Verville.

Martin grabbed his victory Saturday at Tech Motor Speedway. Martin, driving the Naquin Percision Earthmoving/Goudy Wheels Snider Buckley, led all 30 laps from the pole and crossed the line in front of Robert Hall Jr., Matthew Rossi, Ronnie Clark and Beau Binder.

Derek Drown of Amarillo, Texas, and Verville, who resides in Avondale, Ariz., each posted fast times over the weekend.

Martin assumed the points lead following his win at Tech and leads a very close points race, as 13 points separates the top five drivers heading into the next event July 5 at Thunder Raceway in Show Low, Ariz.
