Terre Haute, Ind. - Results Saturday night (June 1) from the running of the "Sumar Classic" USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown Series race at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track, with starting position in parentheses, driver, hometown, laps completed, reason out if any and money won:
Tony Elliott of Kokomo, Ind. captured Saturday night's "Sumar Classic" 100-lap USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown Championship race at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track, leading the final 16 circuits after leader Jerry Coons, Jr. spun in turn two.
"I'm not sure I could have caught him if he hadn't had trouble," admitted Elliott in victory lane. "The track was great and this sort of makes up for last week (not winning the Hoosier Hundred in Indianapolis for the third straight year)."
J.J. Yeley grabbed the early lead from pole starter Derek Davidson and led the first 48 laps before yielding to Coons. Coons was leading when Kyle Steffens flipped on lap 58 and brought out the race's only red flag. He was uninjured. Coons led again on the restart but spun while leading on lap 85. He eventually restarted and finished 11th.
Pre-race favorites Paul White and Jason Leffler tangled while leading the "qualifying race" and started in the back row for the 100-lapper but neither finished.
Michael Lewis of Noblesville, Ind. suffered a broken collarbone in a flip during qualifying and was taken to Terre Haute Regional Hospital for treatment.
Series point leader Dave Steele finished 15th but retained a 20-point cushion over Yeley going into a June 16 race at Pikes Peak International Raceway in Colorado.
