Lewis Repeats in Irwindale's "Casey Diemert Classic" Tony Hunt Emerges as Western Sprint Car Champion
Michael Lewis of Noblesville, Ind. won Thursday night's 40-lap "Casey Diemert Classic" USAC Western Sprint Car race at Irwindale (Calif.,) Speedway. The race was part of the track's 64th "Turkey Night Grand Prix" racing program, USAC's 2004 finale. Lewis, who also won the series finale last year at Irwindale, caught early leader Bobby East on the 14th lap and led the rest of the way in his Team ASE/Snap-On Wesmar/Eagle. East finished second ahead of Chris Schmelzle, Aaron Pierce and Rick Hendrix.
Tony Hunt finished sixth and emerged with a 28-point cushion over Lewis to win the 2004 Western Sprint Car driving title.
Lewis was Thursday night's fastest qualifier and Pierce won the "qualifying race."
