WORLD OF OUTLAWS TO QUENCH FANS' NEED FOR SPEED AT ST. AUGUSTINE ST. AUGUSTINE (February 10) - St. Augustine Speedway will likely be known as one of the world's fastest half-mile ovals after the World of Outlaws opens its 1995 season there February 16-18. Jeff Shepard set St. Augustine's one-lap record with a 15.275-second run in the World of Outlaws' 1994 season opener. The 18.610-second lap recorded by Scott Bloomquist last year was the standard for late models until February 3rd when Ronnie Johnson shattered that mark with a 16.950- second clocking. If Shepard's record is eclipsed by similar proportions, times should dip into the 13-second range with speeds approaching 135 m.p.h. The one-lap record at Eldora Speedway, known as "The World's Fastest Half-Mile," was set by Charlie Fisher on August 13, 1993. His 13.359- second, 134.741 m.p.h., qualifying run will be challenged when the World of Outlaws' fire-breathing, mud-slinging sprint car racers hit St. Augustine's new and improved surface this week.
