Headlines

- Auriol wins the Rallye Catalunya; second was Toyota team mate Loix, both driving the Corolla WRC - Sainz had a number of punctures which dropped him back to 7th - McRae exited the rally on SS16 with transmission damage - Ford had a terrible day. Kankkunen retires on SS16 after hitting a concrete pillar and Thiry retires with engine damage on SS18. Until this, Ford had a 100% finishing record.

Stage 14 La Trona 12,86km Start Time: 08:21 Notes:

- The struggle between Makinen and Sainz has outsood in this stage. The Finnish driver has overtaken Sainz and is third overall. - Loix (Toyota): In the link before La Trona he had a problem with the gearbox. He entered the service park just with the right time to fix it. - Auriol (Toyota): "I attacked. The best defense is a good attack". - Sainz (Toyota): Bad. His car swings. Yesterday it was set too high. - Makinen (Mitsubishi): Hard blow in the front left rim. - Bugalski (Citroën): Very bad. Tries new tires, but they are too soft and he is not well adapted to them. - Nittel (Mitsubishi): Good, no problems. Impressed by Loix’s timing. - Kankkunen (Ford): "The rally was over for me long ago".

Stage 15 Alpens - Les Llosses 21,95km Start Time: 08:50 Notes:

- After the Ripoll assistance, McRae chooses to retire due to a breakdown in the rear differential. Sainz continues to lose terrain in favor of Makinen, who has more than a 10 second advantage over the Sainz overall. Auriol dominates this stage without any trouble, followed by Makinen. - Auriol (Toyota): "I’m very happy, I had a clean drive. I attacked all I could in the places where the road was better". - Loix (Toyota): "Starting form the second position is an advantage, since I the road is very clean. I don’t plan on chasing Auriol. He has a large advantage over me". - Makinen (Subaru): "This is going alright. I’ll continue attacking. I know the car well and I know how I should drive it". - Sainz (Toyota): His suspension was set too high. He will try to fix it" - Thiry (Ford): "We went back to the original settings and I fell much better. In the second part of the stage we lost some time in two bends". - Burns (Mitsubishi): "I don’t understand how Auriol can go so fast". - Panizzi (Mitsubishi): Used ATS tires and they got overheated.

Stage 16 Coll de Santigosa 10,62km Start Time: 10:09 Notes:

- Sainz loses options to the rally after losing the front left tire in the second kilometer. He arrives to the finish line at more than one minute from the winner, - McRae retires due to transmission damage - Makinen, who is still shortening distances with Loix. - Kankkunen retires after a strong blow that makes him lose a wheel. Toyota and Mitsubishi are in the first places. - Auriol (Toyota):"I start to see the rally in a different way now". - Loix (Toyota): "Auriol is going very fast. Makinen is going strong and is recovering a lot of time. I have to watch out". - Bugalski (Citroën): "I found the pace of the first day". - Radström (Toyota): Finishes the stage without tires in two wheels. - Gómez (Seat): Puncture in the right tire.

Stage 17 Coll de Bracons 19,89km Start Time: 10:57 Notes:

- In a tight one-on-one with Makinen, Auriol won the Coll de Bracons stage with only a 5 hundreths of a second difference above the Finnish driver, who shortens distances with Loix in the struggle for the overall second place. Now he is only five hundredths of a second from the Belgian driver. Sainz finishes seventh at 5.8 seconds from Auriol. - Auriol (Toyota): Minor problems with the brakes that did not stop him from winning this stage. Doesn’t go through interior paths to avoid puncturing. - Sainz (Toyota): Has a broken left wing. In a bend, the mousse of the tire falls off. "We lost all options We will try new things with the car". - Thiry (Ford): Ends at more than 35 seconds from Auriol. Loses two places overall.
